Ramnagar Fort

Royal history across the river.

Plan your journey
Ramnagar Fort on the bank of the Ganges near Varanasi

A closer look

Make time
to be here.

Across the Ganges from the old city, the eighteenth-century Ramnagar Fort introduces visitors to Varanasi's royal heritage. Its river-facing walls, courtyards, and historic setting offer a different view of the city. The museum collections add context to the lives, tastes, and traditions associated with the former royal household.

  • Explore the river-facing fort setting and the historic royal collections where galleries are open.
  • Pause for views across the Ganges, keeping to areas permitted for visitors.

Your visit, thoughtfully planned

When to go.
What to expect.

All times are local to Varanasi (IST). Check the linked visitor resources before leaving, particularly on festival days.

Opening & programme times

Published visiting hours

Incredible India lists 10:00 am–5:00 pm. Confirm the fort museum's current opening, last admission and ticket arrangements before departure.

Best time to visit

Go in the morning for a less hurried museum visit. Check the return journey before setting out; festival arrangements and bridge traffic can add considerably to travel time.

October to March is our suggested season for comfortable sightseeing. Start early in hot weather; monsoon rain and high river levels can change access to the ghats.

Time to set aside

Allow 1½–2 hours at the fort, plus the return journey.

Check current directions

Planning estimates, not live journey times. These broad ranges are editorial estimates for an ordinary day, not measured routes or confirmed transport services. Road time and the additional walk are shown separately. Queues, parking searches, transfers and aarti / festival congestion are extra; check a live route before leaving.

Car / taxi

45–80 min by road

+ 5–15 min walk

Travel towards the Lanka / Samne Ghat side and cross by a currently permitted road bridge to Ramnagar. Continue to the fort's visitor entrance; the driver should choose the crossing according to live restrictions.

Open route for Car / taxi to Ramnagar Fort

Auto / e-rickshaw

60–95 min by road

+ 5–15 min walk

Arrange an auto authorised and willing to cross to Ramnagar, agreeing the bridge route and return fare. A local e-rickshaw may require a transfer; confirm the full journey before boarding.

Walking

Not recommended as a hotel-to-fort walk

The river crossing makes this unsuitable for a simple old-city walk. We do not publish a verified pedestrian bridge itinerary; arrange a road transfer instead.

Arrange transport

Shared transport & other options

For buses or shared vehicles, ask the hotel desk about current connections and stops. There is no verified direct service or timetable in this guide; allow extra time for waiting, transfers and the final walk. A private boat visit is a separate, weather-dependent arrangement from an operating ghat, with an onward walk to the fort. Confirm permissions, landing access, life jackets and the return before paying; no fixed boat time is promised here.

Auto and e-rickshaw links show a standard driving route as a reference, not a verified route for that vehicle. Fares, permissions and service availability must be agreed locally.

The final approach

The fort is a historic building with uneven surfaces and stepped areas. Check which museum spaces are open and whether current access suits your group. A road transfer is generally easier to plan than an unconfirmed river crossing.

A little preparation

Travel lightly.
Visit thoughtfully.

Practical suggestions for a more comfortable visit to Ramnagar Fort.

What to carry

  • Comfortable shoes for uneven floors and steps, and water for the journey.
  • Sun protection, a small amount of cash and your return driver's contact details.
  • Time in your itinerary for bridge traffic rather than a tightly scheduled next appointment.

What to avoid

  • Assuming the shortest line across the river is an available road or pedestrian route.
  • Touching museum displays or photographing where signs prohibit it.
  • Depending on a seasonal pontoon crossing or an unconfirmed boat service for your return.
